Couch Lessons

Couch Lessons

by Jeff Kaufman on March 28, 2018

I’ve spent the last couple weeks stuck on the couch following my ACL surgery. It’s been very different, especially since i’m used to being on the move a lot! I’ve had more time to think, read, and reflect than I usually do, and I thought I would share a few things I’ve learned.

-Many of you know this, but life has a way of just sweeping you up into the madness of getting more and more done. Even with just my computer, I could find myself with the endless pressure of getting more done. While accomplishing things is very valuable, even necessary, sometimes I think i’ve allowed it to rule me. In the end, there will always be more you can do. The work is never done. I’m trying to learn to be ok with that and appreciate what God allows me to be a part of, and be satisfied with that.

-These are related, but I think many of us are very used to shoving our stress and anxiety down and just getting on with life. And while I appreciate the discipline and work ethic that allows us to do that, sometimes I believe I have created in myself some unhealthy habits. I’m trying to reset a bit, and learn to actually deal with the stress, anxiety, and just general challenges of life. You can’t necessarily just wish away the struggles, but I don’t believe we are called to simply shove it down and get on with it(at least not all the time!). I know for a fact that I am blessed with so many things, but sometimes I can forget that in the craziness of life. I don’t want that to be the norm, and I want to take time to thank God for all He has done and continues to do in my life.

I want to challenge you - don’t wait for something like surgery to shake you out of the madness that we call life. Take some time to spend with Jesus today. Remember to spend some time just praying. Take a minute with your kids today. Yes, there is plenty to get done  - but I bet a few of those things could wait until tomorrow.

P.S. A very big thank you to all those who prayed, visited, and brought meals to me and my family. I feel very blessed to be part of a great community that truly believes in loving each other with the love of Christ. Thanks to all of you!
